01 Jul 2007 Article: The Lloyd’s Community Programme
The Lloyd's Community Programme (LCP) was first established in 1989 to promote community involvement, both within the Corporation of Lloyd's and across the companies that form the Lloyd's community.
LCP's mission is to help improve the opportunities and environment of the people of Tower Hamlets and neighbouring East London boroughs by mobilising the support and involvement of individuals and companies in the Lloyd's market.
In Tower Hamlets:
•63% of households have an annual income less than £10,000
•67% of children qualify for free school meals compared with the national average of 18%
•At least one in three households has no wage earner
•64% of students have English as an additional language.
Funds are donated through voluntary annual subscriptions from the Corporation of Lloyd's and member companies. Employees from throughout the Lloyd's market are actively involved as volunteers. These projects range from individuals volunteering as number and reading partners to local school children to the Lloyd’s cup – a series of sports competitions that are held during the summer term for local schools to have the chance to play competitive sport against each other.
As part of this programme, London Market Consultant, Darren Hilliard has been leading a team of fellow Mansion House Employees to volunteer their services for the ‘number partner’ and ‘business partner’ initiatives. Focusing on schoolchildren between 13 and 15, the number partner programme provides extra mathematics lessons to help develop the basic but essential skills required for this age group. The business partner programme gives useful career advice and support, in this instance (see picture) mock interview practice and advice.
The Lloyds’s Community Programme has developed to offer varied and practical volunteer programmes across the East London Boroughs. In addition to Mansion House Executive, it is supported by key London market companies such as Amlin plc, XL London Market Ltd, Benfield, Catlin Underwriting Agencies, Heath Lambert Group and Miller Insurance Services Ltd.
